NAIDOC Week 2025
NAIDOC Week is an opportunity to celebrate and recognise the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The theme for 2025 is “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy”. Honouring the strength of our young leaders, the vision of our communities, and the legacy of our ancestors.
NAIDOC Week is a call for continued unity and solidarity, and for all Australians to come together to celebrate First Nations cultures.
In the lead up to NAIDOC Week, Fairfield Gardens and Retail First Shopping Centres are proudly featuring artwork by Senior Indigenous Artist and Cultural Ambassador Uncle John Smith Gumbula.
A distinguished recipient of the QEII Silver Jubilee Queen’s Trust Award, Uncle John is a proud WakkaWakka | GurangGurang man, Yiman, with deep family ties to Indigenous communities across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and Western Australia. He is also an adopted son of the Yolngu people of Galiwinku, Elcho Island, NT. On his late mother’s side, he carries on ancient lineage of Irish and Scottish heritage.
The artwork is titled “Meanjin, Tuurbal & Jagera Freshwaters, Saltwater Country”, and you can view this on signage throughout the Centre until Sunday 13 July.
